Team Player by Julianna Keyes

Don’t hate the player…

Julianna Keyes introduces us to a new set of characters that I am sure we will be getting to know more about later on, but first let's talk about Gwen Scott and Tyler Ashe. This is a contemporary sports-romance and it is the first book in the Charleston Thrasher's series. I do believe you can read this as a Stand-Alone but...this characters will make you want to continue with this series. ARC received from publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. So, what happens when a hot shot baseball player in the midst of a major slump falls for the teams newest PR employee?

Let's get to the review!!
Bitmoji Image
Synopsis:

BOTTOM NINE

Gwen Scott wants to love her job with the Charleston Thrashers, the MLB team she’s worshiped since she was a kid, but she can’t. Hateful colleagues and mind-numbing work make her days unbearable—until her head for baseball gets her exclusive access to the Thrashers’ clubhouse and she comes face-to-face with Tyler Ashe, the team’s sexy shortstop and baseball’s most ineligible bachelor.

BASES LOADED
Ty has sworn off relationships in order to focus on his all-star career, but with his best friend gone, his team struggling, and the press blaming him for every loss, the most recognizable man in the majors is in a slump. Until he starts spending his time off the field with a stern blonde who recites baseball stats for kicks and sees through his arrogant façade.
TWO OUT
As the Thrashers’ season gets into full swing and Gwen adjusts to her new job, their fun banter and friendly teasing turns into stolen kisses and countless steamy nights. The team’s strict policy against player-staff relationships throws a curve ball into the mix, but they can’t hide from their feelings any more than the most famous man in baseball can hide from the spotlight…

Bitmoji Image
Let's talk, shall we?

"I beg your pardon?" She mimicked. "You know what? It's been a long day. You're not the only person who gets shit on at work. You're just the only one who gets paid millions for it. Suck it up."

Gwen Scott was a good female character. I loved how knowledgable she was at her job and how she knew her baseball. Gwen has had a lifetime of being abandoned and rejected by her missionary parents. When the aunt who took her in and instilled her love of baseball in her passes away, Gwen is devastated by the loss and unable to find joy in anything...until an unexpected meeting with Tyler changes everything.

She knows my reputation. No relationship comes before baseball.

Tyler Ashe puts the Ashe in Thrashers—I find this line so funny! What makes it funnier are the characters repeating just to get on Ty's nerves. I felt for Ty in this book, especially because of his friendship with Connor. He finds himself alone suddenly, untethered and unsure and definitely not a team player. He isn't doing good, but once he meets Gwen, his whole life changes.

I wondered how the story was going to end, with Gwen having to chose between following her heart, which meant trusting a man not exactly known for commitment in his relationship history, and concentrating on a job she was finally starting to enjoy and getting praised for.

Well, Gwen and Ty avoided each other and those feelings. Anyways, you’ll have to read to find out what happens with Gwen and Ty. What I will say is that neither character is simple. Even though they find friendship in each other, they both still have things to work on and grow separately.

"Is it true?" was her first question.
"Yes," Gwen said. "It was. But it's not now."

The point here is that Team Player is a good sports romance. The steam level is pretty warm. The angst level, which is what I look for, was pretty low, but you can still feel the romance that is going on between the two characters. I laughed a bit, felt sad over some of the scenes, and I caught myself smiling through some as well. There’s a bit of mystery and a little bit of a reveal that you won’t see coming.
All in all a pretty good read.

BTW I do love how Reed and Lewis were, obviously, fanboying over Twilight. Love that little input.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
Overall, was pretty good book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though I have had my share of sports romances (The Player duet and The Hook-up are my all time favorite). That in no way stopped me from getting caught up in the story and characters’ experiences. The amount of baseball references was just enough to add to the plot and not be boring or overwhelming to a complete baseball noob. Sorry, baseball fans...I'm more of a fútbol fan. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t ‘wow’ me. I will read the next book at least before I write off the series as not-for-me. Anyways...
See u Soon

Twisted Loyalties by Cora Reilly

Okay, Cora Reilly, if you haven't heard of her...you need to. Especially if you are into the mafia-romance trope or you want to start it, this woman's work is a good start. Anyways, I do have to warn that this book is a spin-off of one of her previous series, Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles Series, so you do meet some of the character first on that series, plus it gives you more world-building in this series. It's a recommend series BTW. (reviews of that series will COME!)
Bitmoji Image
Anyways, let's get to the synopsis and review!

Fabiano was raised to follow in his father’s footsteps as Consigliere of the Chicago Outfit – until the man abandons him. Left to fend for himself, Fabiano is forced to fight for a place in the mafia world. As a ruthless street fighter, he quickly earns his place as the new Enforcer of the Las Vegas Camorra – a man to fear.

Leona wants to build a decent life for herself, away from her drug-addicted mother. But soon she catches the attention of a dangerous man – Fabiano Scuderi. Staying out of trouble and living a normal life are near impossible with a man like him.

Leona knows she needs to avoid Fabiano, but men like him aren’t easy to shake off. They always get what they want.

Fabiano cares about only one thing: the Camorra.
But his attraction to Leona soon puts his unwavering loyalty to the test. Is Leona worth risking everything he’s fought for, and ultimately his life?

Now, before I start with this review I do have to warn for SPOILERS for the Blood Mafia Chronicles series. Okay! BUT the first chapter/prologue includes the back story of Fabiano and how he came into his predicament today. Once you get past this and get a little rewind, the book is an amazing trip!

Twisted Loyalties is the first full length novel within the Camorra Chronicles. Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’ this is Fabiano & Leona’s story, both craving a different life to what they were born into. Fabiano was beaten and abandoned, assumed dead and disowned by his own father. Left on the streets to defend for himself by his father's right hand man.

Leona was raised by two dysfunctional parents one addicted to drugs the other addicted to gambling a bad combination, a loveless upbringing. They met by chance..On a rainy day she's new to the city and he's the man that picks her up, she knows nothing about the man she sat beside as he drove her to a rough part of Las Vegas where she's currently living with her estranged father because her mother is back in rehab.
He was all hard lines and muscle, power and danger, but his skin betrayed that when I touched him, he was only human.

This in a way is kind of like an unknown Heroine meets a very dangerous Love Interest who introduces her to a whole new world of danger and a scene she never expected to be in.

Now, I love Fabiano, he’s in the worst situation, out casted and always trying to prove himself. If he’s anything he’s loyal. He then runs into Leona. I love a good damsel in distress storyline so you have the poor girl who has parents that are addicts and this dangerous man comes into her life. There's something about her that has Fabiano wanting to protect her, he can't stay away from her, but will she run in the other direction when she finds out what he is? Who he is? A cage fighter that hones his skill, death matches that keeps the fear in people's eyes, they owned the town, they controlled the nightclubs, bars, restaurants and casinos, from cage fighting to street racing they had their hands in everything.
Bitmoji Image
"Something about her trustful innocence drew me in like a moth to the flame. It was the thrill of the hunt, no doubt. I'd never hunted someone like that."

The relationship between the two I was swooned. I love the back and forth between these two, especially how Fabiano tries to hide the Mafia world from Leona, but in the end he was unsuccessful.

“Who will be the one to make me bleed and beg, Fabiano? Who?” She shook her head, looking crushed. “You are his enforcer. His bloody hand. You are the one I have to fear, right?” She straightened her spine and reached for the knife in my chest holster. I let her do it. She held my gaze as she pulled it out. “Who’s going to pierce my skin with this knife? Who’s going to draw my blood with this blade?” She pressed the tip of the knife against my chest. “Who?” The word was a mere whisper. I leaned closer, even as the blade cut through my shirt and skin. Leona drew it back, but I moved even closer. “I hope you’ll never find out,” I murmured. “Because it sure as hell won’t be me, Leona.”
What I loved most about this book was Reilly's ability to keep me intrigued until the end. It was unpredictable, and when I thought I had figured everything out, she took another route with the story. I love an author who can keep me on my toe, and have me on the edge of my seat. The romance was slow, but the small pieces we got throughout the story were hot and enough to keep me satisfied. The character development was great, and even though they grew I was happy to see that they stayed true to themselves. Plus, the angst in this story is what I am here for. Anyone who has been following me for a while already know I love a slow-burn and an angsty filled story. I love to see the main characters struggle to be together because it makes their love worth it.
"Being with him made me feel good. Very few things in my life did. Why not allow myself that small sin? Because that's what he was: sin."

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Overall, I have to say that Twisted Loyalties was a great mafia romance. There are a lot of them out there, and it gets harder and harder to find a really good and unique one nowadays. However, I shouldn't have doubted Cora Reilly, because she is known to write great plots and characters. She has been out of the writing game for some time, however I think she came back stronger than ever. Twisted Loyalties was a great introduction to The Camorra Chronicles. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Hideaway by Penelope Douglas

Penelope Douglas is back again! Almost a year has past since the events of Corrupt, and Kai is most on edge with Damon still on the lose, he's doing everything to keep the group safe. When he tries to make a deal with the devil himself, Damons' father Gabriel, he never expected to run into Banks, the girl he couldn't get out of his mind from six years ago. But Banks has a secret, and she is stuck in a hard position.

BANKS

Buried in the shadows of the city, there’s a hotel called The Pope. Ailing, empty, and dark—it sits abandoned and surrounded by a forgotten mystery.
But you think it’s true, don’t you, Kai Mori? The story about the hidden twelfth floor. The mystery of the dark guest who never checked in and never checks out. You think I can help you find that secret hideaway and get to him, don’t you?
You and your friends can try to scare me. You can try to push me. Because even though I struggle to hide everything I feel when you look at me—and have ever since I was a girl—I think maybe what you seek is so much closer than you’ll ever realize.
I will never betray him.
So sit tight.
On Devil’s Night, the hunt will be coming to you.
KAI
You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.
No one can know what I’ve turned into.
I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over.
I want my life back.
But the more I’m around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be.
So come on, kid. Don’t chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out.
I’ve seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.

Hideaway is ex-convict, real estate investor and martial art instructor Kai Genato Mori story. Story takes us back to when Kai and his friends ruled their high school as the “Four Horsemen”. Girls pined after them, boys wanted to be them while the parents in their upscale community looked on, letting them run wild… until something went horribly wrong…  Fast forward seven years and Kai is still recovering from his time in prison. He has isolated himself from the world. Running into the enigmatic tomboy Banks stirs up memories. In an unfolding mystery Kai decides she might hold answers, but he did not count on her holding the key to his heart.
"Open your shirt for me, little one. Let’s see if I like what I’m getting for my trouble.”
Kai is in for a shock when he learns, that the women working against Kai and his friends, and making his life more difficult in finding Damon, is none other than the girl he could never seem to forget. One Devil's Night, long ago, Banks, pushed back, ran from and played Kai's games. And now she's here watching his every move, and getting in his way. He'll have to be faster, smarter, and soon he'll be chasing after her once again.

“There are just some things that are more exciting when they’re a secret.”

The want, the need. All the fighting, the sex, the need of being together, yet their different worlds trying to keep them apart. Makes for one passionate and unforgettable romance. I could not get enough of Banks and Kai's back and forth chase. Kai wasn't as intense as I thought he would be but I really liked his character. He could be a huge asshole at time, well most time, but that's actually one of the things that drew me to him. He seemed different with Banks, even when he was still being a jerk, it was just somehow better with Banks.   The book as a whole had me intrigued from the start and I wasn't disappointed with it at all. I'm actually really nervous to see what could possibly happen in the next book but I'm dying to find out.

“People will think what they want to think, not because they believe they are right, but because it’s in their nature to maintain that they are. By defending yourself, you feed the appetite for drama. By not, you’ve ended the conversation. You. Not them”
Rating: ★★★★☆
Overall, Penelope Douglas weaves this story in Hideaway that feels like a darkish angsty new adult and romantic suspense hybrid. She does so much world building even though this a world we are mostly familiar with from book one. As I was reading I kept visualizing the characters in anime form. She pushes boundaries. She gives us a push and pull romance that feels so passionate at times it's mind blowing. She answers so many questions that I know we all had, but still gives us even more by the end!

Cover Reveal for Well Suited by Staci Hart!

Well Suited, the final standalone in the Red Lipstick Coalition Series from Staci Hart, is coming May 2nd and we have the beautiful cover for you!

Chemistry is my love language.

I’ve always been able to separate feelings from chemosignals. A shot of dopamine, a dash of serotonin, and a sprinkle of oxytocin—and bam. You’re in love.

And when egg meets sperm, you’re pregnant.

I couldn’t even be surprised as I stared down at the little blue plus sign, because I knew exactly when and how, and with whom it happened.

When: approximately five weeks ago.
Who: one night stand.
How: prophylactic malfunction.

The upside? I don’t have to go looking for a suitable mate.

Genetically, he’s the cream of the crop. His musculature is a study in symmetry and strength, his height imposing and dominant. He is a man who thrives on control and command, a man who survives on intelligence and resourcefulness. A perfect male specimen.

And the whole package is wrapped up in a flawlessly tailored suit.

I’m having this baby, and he insists we’re well-suited to have it together. And what’s worse? He wants more, in the way of love and marriage.

But love isn’t real. It’s just a product of chemistry.

And if he changes my mind about that, we’re both in trouble.

About the Author
Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

Penelope Douglas is definitely one of the strongest authors out there in the romance genre. To say Corrupt is a dark romance is a bit of an understatement. I was not expecting this kind of book from Penelope. I was intrigued, repulsed (at times) and completely captivated while reading. The first 30% or so I struggled with the story. I didn’t know what direction it would take and I wasn’t sure if it was the book for me, but I’m so glad I carried on and finished. Once that 30% mark passed, I was unable to put it down. It

Erika

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
Unprotected.
The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.

I’m not going to kid glove you here, there are parts of this story that are hard to read. There are things that happen that made me say ‘Hold up- that is taking it much too far’. Michael and his friends aren’t always nice guys. They’re more bad than good a lot of the story. I don't remember the last time a book kept me up all night reading. I inhaled it in one sitting, completely enraptured. It was positively spellbinding and unlike anything I'd have ever expected from this author. There's one thing to say for Penelope's writing, it's absolutely captivating. She knows how to draw her readers in, how to make her characters so alive they practically leap off the pages at you.

“When you want to make an impression and you think you’ve gone far enough, go a little further. Always leave them wondering if you’re just a little bit crazy, and people will never fuck with you again.”

Michael was that character for me. He was so intense, in a way that equal parts terrified and seduced. The fact that you get both his and Rika's POV only serves to draw you in fully into the story. Even when he does something that you want to hate him for, even when Rika does something you want to throttle her for, you can't put it down. It was like an addiction. I had to have a hit. I simply couldn't stop until I knew what was going on. And Penelope keeps you hanging on that edge of suspense until the last page. They mystery behind everything is what really captured my interest. It's told in flashbacks of three years ago and present, but it's weaved together flawlessly. I know some readers don't enjoy the flashbacks from past to present, but it truly worked it. It's what drove the plot and the mystery. It whetted the appetitive for more.
"Such a good girl... Say it, Rika."
"I'm a good girl," she panted, her voice shaky.
"And I'm going to fuck you up."
Erika Fane has been in love with Michael Crist. He captivated her with his brooding intensity, drew her in with his aloofness, and completely disregarded her. But something about him, something behind his eyes drew her to him like a moth to a flame. Erika was too young to really know. Too naive to really see. And she was also dating Michael's younger brother. Now she's single, in a new city by herself for college, and fully in Michael's crosshairs
What if I'd completely corrupted her? What if she'd begun to like playing games too much, and the lust to play- and to win- overpowered her need for me?
Rating: ★★★★☆
Overall, this book was entertaining, edgy, and dark. I was not expecting the road this book took. If you read this book, be prepared to have your limits pushed. It’s not a pretty story, it’s not a happy story, it’s a story about two messed up people who find solace in each other. It’s more of a hate story than a love story. It’s a story of revenge and just how far you will go to get that vengeance you crave. Love this story, hate this story, either way know that this story will own you. It will stay on your mind for days. It really messed me up in the best way. If you love a dark romance and are looking for a hate/love story that’s twisty, INTENSE and sexy this is one I recommend!

The Hardest Route by A.S. Teague

"Vegas. I'd gotten pregnant in Vegas, The first and only one-night stand I had ever had. And I didn't even know his last name. Outstanding."
The Hardest Route by A.S. Teague is a sports romance with two unexpected people who have to come together for not one, but TWO unexpected life crashes. A.S Teague created two unforgettable characters and I fell in love with them and their story. I can't wait for this series (which I'm REALLY hoping it is!) Thanks to A.S Teague for sending me this ARC and giving me the opportunity to read this book. Anyways, let's get to the review!
let's go

Synopsis:
My friends used to tell me ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.’ Clearly, they lied because a few months later, I found out my one-night stand was pregnant.

I couldn’t handle a baby. I was Griffin Rockwell, the best wide receiver the league had ever seen. But what choice did I have? My baby girl was coming whether I was ready for her or not.

Brooke turned out to be an amazing woman and mother. For seven years, we were the MVP of co-parenting—and even better friends.

That all changed when tragedy struck our makeshift family and I was faced with the terrifying possibility of losing the one woman I was quickly realizing I couldn’t live without.

I was at the height of my career and on the path to becoming the greatest of all time.

But keeping my family together, with Brooke by my side, might prove to be the hardest route of all.

Okay, this book was unexpected to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would even consider re-reading it later on. This book was a good quick read and the characters were very well-written. Even the steamy scenes were unexpectedly good, maybe because the feel of the book I didn't expect them to be steamy, good but not like Roni Loren steamy.
Bitmoji Image

I loved Brooke! She was kind and understanding. She never asked for anything and was an amazing mother and friend. I love how she wants to keep her independence even though Griff would take care of her financially. It seems that in many romance novels that involves rich heroes, the females always end up being the little housewives or too submissive to their partners. Brooke wanted her career and had a plan to make it work for the both of them.
You Go Girl
"But you cannot let your what-ifs scare you away." He lifted a shoulder and smirked. "Besides, even if you try, I'm not letting you go." He traced my lower lip with the pad of his thumb. "Especially now that I know what you can do with this mouth."
Griffin Rockwell was a very good male lead. When we first meet him, he was just drafted into the Bears at twenty-one. He is described as the best wide receiver, right behind his friend Aiden (hoping for his book next!). I thought because of his age and career that he was going to be immature and full of himself like most authors portray athlete heroes, which is annoying AF. But boy, hA.S Teague wrote Griff as kind, loving, mature, responsible and the best dad to Allie and the best friend/lover to Brooke.

He cleared his throat, but his voice was still gravelly when he asked, "You realized what?" I turned in to him, our heads both resting on the same pillow, my nose inches from his. "I'm saying that you are the absolute love of my life. Somewhere, deep down, I think I've always known that I love you."
I loved Brooke and Griffin’s relationship. They were great co-parents and had a great relationship with each other. They didn’t have the most conventional start and it wasn’t always easy getting to the end but Brooke and Griff are truly each other’s everything from the moment their daughter was born.

Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ☆
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It took a twist to the emotional side in the end, but I gave it three stars because it had some things I love in my books that it didn't have. I do love that it wasn't the trope of sports romance and what drove this story was the tragedy that struck them. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster. It made me laugh, it had me swooning, and it had me crying. If you enjoy sports romances, if you enjoy surprise baby romances this is one for you. You won’t regret taking the chance on this sweet story.
