Midnight Blue by LJ Shen

“Life is full of secrets, and narrow-minded people, and sugar-coated, empty conversations that hold no weight. What’s real is what’s inside us. What’s important is what we feel.”
I’ve read previous works of LJ Shen and what I love about her stories are how different they are from other New Adult authors. She’s not afraid to take a chance in writing a book where people would have to read twice about what they just read. For example, a character can say something crude and filthy but it goes well with the story. Another thing about her taking risk, some of the books she writes can be something no one has thought about or has but were too scared to write it because of the content. But LJ Shen does it so well that it makes her a unique author in the New Adult world.

This book would be labeled into the ‘haters to lovers’ category in the New Adult genre. LJ Shen tends to play a lot with this category but she plays it so well. There are some authors who try to do it but it just comes off as it to be in the ‘trend’. LJ Shen actually shows when they began to care about each other, when their feelings actually began to happen, and then the aftermath.

So, what do you get when you have a foulmouthed, bad-boy, addict of a British rock star and a sweet and innocent, selfless and snapping baby-sitter who must stay on this guy to make sure he is clean? You get Midnight Blue by LJ Shen.

Indie Bellamy is your ordinary girl who gets pulled into a world full of chaos and money. She took a job opportunity to help her and her brother’s family out of poverty. Her brother dropped out of joining the NFL and began to spiral out of control. While her sister-in-law is busy trying to provide for her ill two-year-old. They all live in a one-bedroom apartment, adding more into her stress. She finds an opportunity to get money quick by giving up three months of her life to ‘babysit’ a rock star. But the thing is, this isn’t just an ordinary bad rock star.

Alex Winslow is one of the world’s hottest musicians and had a world tour after coming out of rehab. His life spiraled out of control after breaking up with his then girlfriend Fallon after she cheated on his with his rival. Now, he needs to be clean after suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. This is where Indie comes to play.

“Because when you’re a rock star and make a crap ton of money, everyone wants a piece of the pie. A pie you baked. With ingredients you bought.”

Their relationship starts off rocky. They despise themselves due to the circumstances they find themselves to be. He nicknames her ‘Stardust’, which I find to be adorable. What I love about their relationship is how they jump off each other. While he is mostly a dick to everyone, she doesn’t stay quiet and fights back. She crawls under his skin and he doesn’t know what to do with her.
In the beginning, Alex just wanted to use her like he does with all the groupies he comes along with. But to his surprise, she becomes his muse for the tour and he can’t write music without her present, therefore he can’t get rid of her. So in his eyes, Indie would help him write his album, he’d sleep with her and then get rid of her when he was done.
“Because Indie, like drugs, was a temporary fix. Once our three months were up, she’d leave my surly arse and run back to what was left of her dysfunctional-yet-loving family. I wouldn’t blame her. Hell, I wouldn’t even stop her. Because deep down, I knew a bastard like me couldn’t keep her.”

I’ve always said that the characters in a book is what drives the story. You can have the most amazing plot in the entire world but if you have characters who are useless and monotone then you better believe no one is going to want to finish your story. With the main characters of this book, they drove the story. Indie was feisty and didn’t let herself be pushed around by a rock star. she retaliated every word he said to her and she did things he told her not to do because she wanted. Alex, on the other hand, didn’t know how to control this little ball of blue fury and sometimes would be surprised by her actions, specifically one scene where he tells her to find him a one nigh stand. She does it without hesitation because she doesn’t want him to know that her feelings for him are growing.
“Close your eyes,” he croaked.

“Why?”

“Because everything is so much more beautiful when you can’t see it.”

Over all this book was an amazing read and I loved every single thing about it. I remember seeing it on my Goodsread feed and I decided to check it out. Three chapters in, I knew I was stuck in this world until the last page. It was emotional and had me speechless. This book is explicit for young readers and can be read if you are over eighteen though.
“I like to live on the edge.” He licked his lower lip.

“I like to live safely within the lines,” I retorted.

“It’s a comfortable place to be, but nothing ever grows there.”

The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

image©withbooks

“Libraries were full of ideas—perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”

On October 23, 2018, a beloved series known as the Throne of Glass series will finally come to an end. It will be nostalgic for many of us readers and fans of Sarah J. Maas’s fantastic world. She has made a name for herself in the Fantasy world. Many critics have often named her the next ‘J.K Rowling’. Almost every book she releases always ends up becoming the #1 NYT Best Seller.
She has so far released a total of eleven books, split into two series. The first book she published was Throne of Glass on August 2, 2012. The book didn’t make an impact in the beginning as it is now. The story took many readers by surprise since it placed a female character on a pedestal that she reached on her own, without the help of a male character.
The series follows Celaena Sardothien, an 18-year-old assassin in the kingdom of Adarlan. After being imprisoned for a year by the king, she accepts an offer to compete with other assassins for a chance to become the king’s champion and soon win her freedom. The series kicks off after she is chosen as the candidate for the Prince Dorian, the crown prince of Adarlan.
To celebrate the ending of this amazing series, I will be rereading the first five books in the series and posting my reviews of the books on here so you guys can read them along the way. I will also provide the music I listened to along the way of reading this series. The books are the following:
0.    The Assassin’s Blade: A collection of prequel stories (four novellas) which gives us a view of how Celaena was before she was sent to the minor slave camps.
1.    Throne of Glass:Is the official first book of the series when it sets the story or the first three books of the series. After a year of slavery, Celaena is given a chance to become the king’s personal assassin if she wins a completion against the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land.
2.    *Crown of Midnight
3.    *Heir of Fire
4.    *Queen of Shadows
5.    *Empire of Storms
6.    *Tower of Dawn
7.    *Kingdom of Ash
*Description not given due to spoilers.
I’m honestly so excited to go back into this series since the last time I read the last one was just last year. I will link the reviews on this post so it’ll be a bit quicker to maneuver. If this is your first time reading these books, glad to have you hop on this journey with me. If you are alsorereading this series before the big finale, welcome back to the world of Erilea!

The Hook-Up by Kristen Callihan

24852488
“I’m not going to say it was love at first sight. No, it was more like oh, hell-yes-please, I’ll have that. With a helping of right-the-fuck-now on the side.”

The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love
Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy, right?

Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…
Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she’s shut him down. Completely.
That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It’s a good thing Drew knows all about winning.
All’s fair in love and football…Game on

Okay, okay, okay. This may seem insane but…can I marry Drew? Like really marry him! Books like these is the reason I am love college romance. It is addictive, angst, and steamy! It’s such an adorable story of these two people who are coming to terms of the reality of the new world they will be going into after school. They are bumped by reality and are trying to hold on to their ‘fun and easy going’ life before. This book had the perfect characters, perfect storyline, the perfect dialogue, and overall just heartwarming. I was going into this book thinking it was going to be an overrated story like the previous ones I read but I was knocked off my feet and now I want more of these two characters.

This book follows the story of two young adults from different sides of the college spectrum. One is a star athlete while the other wants to remain in the shadows in the ‘safe-zone’.
“You’ll see, Drew. One day, love will creep up and smack you upside the head. Then you’ll understand.”
Drew Baylor is the gorgeous quarterback everyone loves and wants to associate themselves with. On the outside, he places a mask over his true self. He is outgoing, goes to parties with his fellow teammates, flirts with random girls, trying to void his loneliness. After the death of his parents, he is trying to find a place to just call home. Not as in a house or an apartment, but someone he can feel like he can speak his mind and be himself. That’s the moment he meets Anna Jones.

Anna Jones is a young lady who hides in the shadows. Her years of high school were filled with bullies. She was always made to feel ugly, unworthy, and isolated. Her father left her and her mother because he couldn’t ‘deal with her’. Due to this, her mother lived her life heartbroken, something Anna vowed to never do. She keeps herself distant from any stranger or guy. Instead focuses only on hook-ups.

The two begin a relationship as friends with benefits – we all know how those end up – and let me just say, those scenes were…yep…they were great! One thing I love that Kristen gives these characters strong chemistry. The witty dialogue and fun banter had me giggling and blushing of how cute they are together. This book has one of the best dialogues I’ve read in a New Adult book.
“You're so beautiful to me," he says against my mouth.
I pull back to look him in the eyes. "To you?"
He often says that, and part of me wonders if others have said something contrary to him.
"To me." His fingers trace the curve of my shoulder, brushing a lock of hair over it. "When we're together, it's just you and me. No one else exists.”
Drew and Anna had a lot of moments where my heart just couldn’t take them anymore. Anna was annoying me for a bit since she kept trying to push Drew away but I knew things she didn’t know as the reader, so I tried to give her a pass…still annoyed though. It was also a breath of fresh air since in other romance books, it’s always the man who doesn’t have to have more with the woman and just wants a ‘sex-no-relationship’ type. In this book, Drew wants to be with Anna because he loves her but she had already removed any trace of settling down because of her father.
“Why won't you let me kiss you, Anna?"
I can't breathe.
"Why, Anna?"
"It's too much," I rasp.
"Not when I want everything." He says it so deep and strong, a staking of a claim. "And I want everything with you, Anna.”
(Spoiler) There is a bit of a break-up scene in the middle of the book which honestly like and wished it was longer. I love anything that entitles grovel! If you don’t know what grovel is when a character of a story makes a huge mistake or treats their significant other like crap but in the end when they try to win them over but the significant other makes it hard for them and forces them to work hard for their forgiveness. I wanted to see more of Anna groveling with Drew and the other way as well. I wanted them to end up fighting for their love but it didn’t happen. That was just one disappointment of the story.

“Some people never understand the gift they have.” A light pressure on the back of my neck eases me closer to his warmth. “And some people wait a lifetime to have someone to love.”

In the end, if you haven’t read any New Adult books and want to start, this is a good book to start your addiction with. Now, this is Book 1 in an ongoing series but it is so far, the only book with Anna and Drew. If Kristen decides to write a follow-up on these two characters…

Bad Things by R.K. Lilley

Image result for bad things rk lilley
Danika has had a hard upbringing that has made her feel a bit obsessed with having a routine. She works hard as a 'nanny' with her best friend and her ex-husband. But sweet Danika also loves trouble. She likes dating bad boys, boys who are in trouble, or just look like trouble. When she meets Tristan, she knows he is trouble with a capital T. Of course, she is attracted like a magnet and the story begins from there.

Bad Things by R.K. Lilley was a hard struggle for me! At first it was a little hard to get into the book. At first it seemed it would be a simple bad boy falls for a good girl kind of story but honestly, it wasn't. Danika is twenty-one years old and Tristan is twenty-six years old. Tristan likes to live free and not care for the world. Danika wants to work and keep herself fit and focus on her future. Tristan changes her pattern and soon she turns into someone else.

So what are my thoughts on this book...

Yep, I did not like it at all. I am a fan of bad-boy kind of stories but this one was not for me. It was a real struggle for me to read it at the beginning. I didn't connect to Danika at all through this book, honestly I kept thinking about how she could go on after he did this and did that. Maybe, it's just the Scorpio in me who doesn't like to take crap from anyone. But Tristan is a real asshole and jerk that just got under my skin in so many scenes.

Image result for excuse me gifFor example, there is a scene where he gets angry at her because she tells him she is in love with him. Instead of saying like, "I'm sorry, I don't feel the same way." He shouts at her and then leaves to go party, not communicating with her after two weeks. They reunite when his 'band' (yes...he's in a band.) plays at a club. They reconcile, like sex reconcile which is stupid! (Spoiler) Later she finds out, he had sex with another girl not even three hours before he had sex with her!

(Spoiler) When they are a couple again, Danika meets many of Tristan's past one night stands and she goes crazy. Like, she throws plates at one girl. Plates! Then in another scene, she pulls his ex-girlfriend's hair and throws her on the ground only because they were talking and he was being flirting. Like, excuse me, he is your man and he is flirting with someone. I can't stand people like that, seriously. They break up for like the millionth time because Danika was finally tired of his anger temper...like his anger temper made you leave? Not his cheating raids? Girl, please.

The only character I did somewhat like is Frankie. She seemed like the girl who would have your back but at the same time would have the guy's back. Dean, bye! He is the guy who is just asshole. Don't waste your time with someone like him because nope.
tyrel jackson wtf GIF by IFC
(Spoiler) Suddenly Tristan's brother, Jared, another man-whore, dies due to a heart-attack caused by drugs. this whole family is crazy because their mother ends up blaming Tristan for his death and Tristan just goes down to rock-bottom. Danika comes back to his side to support him through the hard time. Tristan finally tells her he loves her and BAM, to be continued...

I did not like this book at all. Maybe it's because she is a young twenty-one year old and was too closed in that when she saw the first person to free her from it. Tristan is the kind of guy to steer clear from. I couldn't stand him at the second part of the book. In the beginning, he seemed okay and funny but heck no, bye boo!

I would rate this book: ★★☆☆☆
Just because I didn't like this book doesn't mean you won't like it. You can find the book on amazon as kindle and paper back. Also, I will read more book from R.K. Lilley, just because I didn't like this book doesn't mean I won't shelf other books from her. I will also continue with this series, hopefully, both characters will grow up a bit more.
