“I’m not going to say it was love at first sight. No, it was more like oh, hell-yes-please, I’ll have that. With a helping of right-the-fuck-now on the side.”
The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love
Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy, right?
Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…
Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she’s shut him down. Completely.
That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It’s a good thing Drew knows all about winning.
All’s fair in love and football…Game on
Okay, okay, okay. This may seem insane but…can I marry Drew? Like really marry him! Books like these is the reason I am love college romance. It is addictive, angst, and steamy! It’s such an adorable story of these two people who are coming to terms of the reality of the new world they will be going into after school. They are bumped by reality and are trying to hold on to their ‘fun and easy going’ life before. This book had the perfect characters, perfect storyline, the perfect dialogue, and overall just heartwarming. I was going into this book thinking it was going to be an overrated story like the previous ones I read but I was knocked off my feet and now I want more of these two characters.
This book follows the story of two young adults from different sides of the college spectrum. One is a star athlete while the other wants to remain in the shadows in the ‘safe-zone’.
“You’ll see, Drew. One day, love will creep up and smack you upside the head. Then you’ll understand.”
Drew Baylor is the gorgeous quarterback everyone loves and wants to associate themselves with. On the outside, he places a mask over his true self. He is outgoing, goes to parties with his fellow teammates, flirts with random girls, trying to void his loneliness. After the death of his parents, he is trying to find a place to just call home. Not as in a house or an apartment, but someone he can feel like he can speak his mind and be himself. That’s the moment he meets Anna Jones.
Anna Jones is a young lady who hides in the shadows. Her years of high school were filled with bullies. She was always made to feel ugly, unworthy, and isolated. Her father left her and her mother because he couldn’t ‘deal with her’. Due to this, her mother lived her life heartbroken, something Anna vowed to never do. She keeps herself distant from any stranger or guy. Instead focuses only on hook-ups.
The two begin a relationship as friends with benefits – we all know how those end up – and let me just say, those scenes were…yep…they were great! One thing I love that Kristen gives these characters strong chemistry. The witty dialogue and fun banter had me giggling and blushing of how cute they are together. This book has one of the best dialogues I’ve read in a New Adult book.
“You're so beautiful to me," he says against my mouth.
I pull back to look him in the eyes. "To you?"
He often says that, and part of me wonders if others have said something contrary to him.
"To me." His fingers trace the curve of my shoulder, brushing a lock of hair over it. "When we're together, it's just you and me. No one else exists.”
Drew and Anna had a lot of moments where my heart just couldn’t take them anymore. Anna was annoying me for a bit since she kept trying to push Drew away but I knew things she didn’t know as the reader, so I tried to give her a pass…still annoyed though. It was also a breath of fresh air since in other romance books, it’s always the man who doesn’t have to have more with the woman and just wants a ‘sex-no-relationship’ type. In this book, Drew wants to be with Anna because he loves her but she had already removed any trace of settling down because of her father.
“Why won't you let me kiss you, Anna?"
I can't breathe.
"Why, Anna?"
"It's too much," I rasp.
"Not when I want everything." He says it so deep and strong, a staking of a claim. "And I want everything with you, Anna.”
(Spoiler) There is a bit of a break-up scene in the middle of the book which honestly like and wished it was longer. I love anything that entitles grovel! If you don’t know what grovel is when a character of a story makes a huge mistake or treats their significant other like crap but in the end when they try to win them over but the significant other makes it hard for them and forces them to work hard for their forgiveness. I wanted to see more of Anna groveling with Drew and the other way as well. I wanted them to end up fighting for their love but it didn’t happen. That was just one disappointment of the story.
“Some people never understand the gift they have.” A light pressure on the back of my neck eases me closer to his warmth. “And some people wait a lifetime to have someone to love.”
In the end, if you haven’t read any New Adult books and want to start, this is a good book to start your addiction with. Now, this is Book 1 in an ongoing series but it is so far, the only book with Anna and Drew. If Kristen decides to write a follow-up on these two characters…
